Charles Boyd Burnett, 93, went to be with His Lord and Savior on March 4, 2017 at his home. He was born May 8, 1923 in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, son of the late Stacy Watson Burnett and Onie West Burnett. Charles was a sophomore at Clemson University when he enlisted in the US Army and served his country with distinction as a sergeant in the 79th Division during World War 11. He landed on Omaha Beach in the first wave of replacement troops after D-Day and fought with the 313th Infantry through the end of the war receiving the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his service.
After receiving his degree at Clemson he worked for Reeves Brothers over 30 years and retired in 1989. Charles was a member of First Baptist Church in Bessemer City where he taught Sunday school for many years and was a long time member of the Bessemer City Lions Club. Throughout his life he was an avid golfer and played many rounds with his buddies and his grandsons.
He was a loving and devoted husband to his wife of 69 years "Red Rose" father to 3 daughters, Ginni Long (Jody), Becky Cochran (Tim), Linda Hovis (Mark), and Papa to 8 grandchildren, Chip Long, Jennifer Long Causby (Dustin), Joshua Cochran (Johanna), Matthew Cochran (Lori), Joe Cochran (Katelyn), Lauren Cochran Spoth (Nick), Taylor Hovis and Katie Hovis and 5 great grandchildren, Canaan, Kit, Charlie, Rosemary and Colette.
Charles is now whole again, with the love of his life, dancing at the feet of Jesus.
A celebration of his life will be held 11 am Monday, March 6, 2017 at First Baptist Church of Bessemer City, 107 E. Washington Avenue, Bessemer City, officiated by Pastor Tom Ravan and Chaplain and son-in-law Tim Cochran. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the family life center at the church.
A private graveside service will be held at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Spartanburg, South Carolina. Memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church of Bessemer City, P.O. Box 397, Bessemer City, NC 28016. Arrangements are with the West Chapel of Greene Funeral Service and Crematorium, Gastonia.
