Cathy Hess

Cathy Jo Hess, 64, passed peacefully on January 10, 2026, at Atrium Health in Charlotte, NC.

Cathy was born on July 3, 1961, in Cabarrus County to Glenn Hess and Cynthia Christy Greene. Known for her spunky personality and unmistakable spirit, Cathy left an impression on everyone she met.

She worked for many years at Caldwell Cleaners and the 29 Quick Mart on the corner of Poplar Tent and 29, where she was more than a familiar face behind the counter-she was a constant, a friendly smile, a quick joke, and someone who made even an ordinary stop feel personal. Cathy had a way of connecting with people, of making them feel seen and welcome, whether they were family, friends, or strangers passing through. Cathy loved the outdoors-camping and fishing were among her favorite pastimes-speaking of fish, that bucket of fish from Mr.C's in Concord was some of her favorite! She especially enjoyed cooking for her family, with her grandkids holding a special place in her heart.

True to her nature, Cathy loved being barefoot-free and unbothered. On the rare occasions she wore shoes for something special, those who knew her best could be sure there was a pair of flip-flops or Crocs tossed somewhere in the back of the car, just in case she needed them. That was just Cathy-comfortable, practical, and unapologetically herself.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Cynthia Christy Greene of Concord; her stepfather, Billy Eugene Greene of Concord; and her brothers, Marty Ray Greene and Garren Edward Hess, both of Concord.

She is survived by her son, Timothy Jacob Hess (Michelle) of Rock Hill; her daughter, Jennifer Laine Verry of Goldsboro; and her brother, Bryon Elee Greene of O'Fallon, Illinois. She also leaves behind eight grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

Cathy will be missed most by those who affectionately called her "Crazy Granny."
