Calvin Owenby, 82, of Gastonia, NC, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2025, surrounded by family. Born on February 5, 1943, Calvin was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
Calvin was a lifelong resident of Gastonia, where he and his family proudly owned and operated Owenby and Sons Sawmill, a legacy rooted in hard work and tradition. A man who loved the outdoors, Calvin found joy in hunting, running his dogs, and the simple pleasure of sitting on his front porch waving at passing cars. Above all, he cherished time with his family – especially his grandchildren, who were his greatest pride and joy. Calvin was also a US Army veteran and a member of United Baptist Church.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Sandra Curtis Owenby; his children, Kevin Owenby (wife Audrey) and Kristi Evans, all of Gastonia; and his grandchildren, Boone Owenby (wife Megan), Kasey Owenby, Kaden Miller, Rylan Evans, Aaron Owenby, and Karsyn Evans. He also leaves behind his brother, Garland Owenby and sisters, Lois Montenegro and Ruth Robinson, as well as many extended family members and close friends who will miss him dearly.
Calvin was preceded in death by his son, Michael Keith Owenby; his parents, Harley Owenby Sr. and Christine Owenby; and his siblings, Allen Owenby, Harley Owenby Jr., Geneva Auten, Betty Parker, and Genevieve Owenby.
Calvin's life was one of quiet strength, deep love, and an unwavering dedication to his family and community, His memory will live in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at United Baptist Church, 1970 Lowell Bethesda Rd, Gastonia. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 1:00 PM. Calvin will be interred at Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery in Belmont.
Military honors will be provided by the US Army National Guard.
