Bruce Burnell Whitley, Sr.

Bruce Burnell Whitley, Sr. 78, of Gastonia, NC, passed away Tuesday, August 29, 2023, at Belaire Health Care Center, Gastonia.

He was born June 13, 1945, in Stanly Co, NC, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Whitley.

Bruce attended Assembly of Faith, Dallas. He was a caring and loving person, and his family was very special to him. He served his country for 18 years in the US Navy. Bruce will be greatly missed.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Darrell Whitley; sisters, Lavonne, Averill, and Loretta Lambert; first wife, Juanita Whitley; and son, Bobby Moss.

Bruce is survived by his wife, Martha Whitley; sons, Bruce Whitley, Jr. and wife Kimberly, Ricky Moss and wife Rebecca, and Tallie Purkey and wife Angela; daughters, Raven W. Green and SFC Timothy Green, and Lila Irvin Lugo and husband, Sabastian; sister, Anita Mauney; grandchildren, Kaytlynne Whitley, Anthony Whitley, Noah Kieffer, Griffen Haney, Jaime Whitley, Gena Pearsall, Noah Moss, Kylie Moss, Amber Moss, Danica Green, Delayna Green, Eli Purkey, Aiden Purkey, Brandon Smeltzer, Christian Griffith, and Heather Beaty and husband Brandon; and great-grandchildren, Naomi Laughridge, Marley Moss, Avery Dye, Charley Dye, Ava Haney, Bubba Dye, Sissy Dye, Lilian Beaty and Lola Beaty.

The family will receive friends 11:30am-12:30pm, Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at the South Chapel of Greene Funeral Service – 1503 S. York Rd., Gastonia, NC 28052.

A service officiated by Rev. David Stewart, will be held 1:00pm, Tuesday, at Gaston Memorial Park Mausoleum, section D.

Interment will follow the service at the mausoleum.
