Arthur M. "Sonny" Hughes, 68, of Gastonia, passed away peacefully at home in the early morning hours of Saturday, November 25, 2017. He was born February 2, 1949 to the late Jackie M. Hughes and Ava L. Hughes.
Sonny served in the United States Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He served 2 years and received 13 medals and bars, including the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and a Sharp Shooter Medal. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Sargent E-5. Sonny retired after 39 years of service with A&E with 25 years perfect attendance. He had a deep love for his family, music, fishing and flying his many kites.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Gary Hughes.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Debora Hughes; son Adam Hughes and fiancée' Lesa Davis; daughter, Wendy Hughes of Gastonia; son, Benjamin Hughes, daughter Marie Hughes; granddaughter "cute and lovable" Tiffany Hughes; brothers, Bobby Hughes and David Hughes of Gastonia and many nieces and nephews.
His memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at Mt. View Agape Church, located at 506 Sparrow Springs Road, Kings Mountain, NC 28086.
There will be a private inurnment of his ashes to the National Cemetery of Salisbury at a later date to be announced by the family.
