Angela Dawn Starnes was born June 12, 1973, passed away at her home in Gastonia on May 16, 2022. She was born in Rock Hill, SC to the late Reggie W. Cunningham and the late Wawanna A. Cunningham.
Angie was raised in Gaston County and graduated from Ashbrook High School in 1991. She attended Gaston College and Belmont Abbey College before receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Columbia Southern University with a 4.0 GPA.
She began her career in law enforcement as a sworn officer in 2003. During her early career she worked with the Belmont Abbey College Police Department, the City of Belmont Police Department and Charlotte Area Transit. She joined the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in 2012 working her way up from patrol officer to her dream job as a Detective in the Homicide Unit in June 2019. During her career in law enforcement, she was recognized numerous times for her acts of kindness to citizens she met. Queen City News profiled her in 2018 after she helped a stranded construction worker caught in a winter storm get a meal and a way back to his family in Fayetteville.
Angie, "GiGi," loved spending time with her grand babies and her canine "niece," Kitty Pasour. She also loved travelling, especially to the beach or anywhere with a pool. She enjoyed photography and had several of her photos published from her Instagram account.
Preceding her in death was her late husband, Shane Starnes, former Chief of Police of the Belmont Abbey College Police Department. She is survived by her fiancé Jeff Palmer; daughters, Megan (David) Kirby, Ashli Clark; and stepdaughter, Sydnie Starnes (Wesley) Lee; grandchildren, Daygen, Jordyn, and Tyler Kirby; siblings, Lisa (Daniel) Jenkins, Kelly (Jon) Pasour, Regina Rose, Jennifer Cunningham, Josh Cunningham, and stepsister and step-brother Tina and James Rose; aunt and uncle, Teresa and Ricky Hedrick; nephews, Zachary and Zeppelin Layel, Logan Sinclair, Corey Rose; niece, Emily Sinclair; and other cherished family members and dear friends. Angie was also preceded in death by her aunts, Wanda Henderson and Bobbie (Eugene) Puckett.
A memorial service officiated by Abbot Placit Solari, will be held 3pm, Saturday, May 28, 2022, at Belmont Abbey Cathedral - 100 Belmont Mount Holly Rd, Belmont, NC 28012.
Family will receive friends 5-8pm, Friday, May 27, 2022, at the South Chapel of Greene Funeral Service – 1503 South York Rd, Gastonia, NC 28052.
