It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Andrew "Drew" Michalak announces his passing on September 28, 2018 at his place of residence in Gastonia, NC. He was born on February 22, 1977 in Inglewood, CA. He was the son of Steven and Fe Michalak and brother to Dorothy Westbrook. He will be fondly remembered by his nieces Zoe, Ryan and Rowan Westbrook.
Drew lived life the way he wanted. Shortly after graduating, South Point, he chose to enlist in the Marines. He attained the rank of corporal while serving his country and was the radio technician for his battalion. He enjoyed many outings with his fellow Marines, such as backpacking in California near Camp Pendleton. Drew spent his last year of enlistment overseas in Japan at Camp Henson. He was able to experience authentic sushi, the salt life and the comradery of good friends.
Drew loved kids and was a fun-loving uncle to his three nieces. The girls would often draw pictures for his that he would hang up in his room. He was an avid animal lover too. Drew made many lifelong friends that provided him with love, support and laughter. Drew was an energetically humorous person who could easily converse on polities or other serious topics.
Drew loved reading and had a passion for technology. He taught himself the science of computer programming while still in middle school. Drew was a fan of role-playing games too. He enjoyed and collected his favorites, including Magic the Gathering and Dungeon & Dragons. Drew's musical interest were eclectic, ranging from classical to heavy metal.
His family would like to express appreciation to the many friends that Drew influenced. Drew's Hooters family held fundraisers and were among the many friends to visit him in his last days. He also formed a special bond with Officer Ewers that had arrested him then realized Drew needed medical attention Officer Ewers shared their chance meeting with local news anchors and journalists. He also began a GoFundMe to help Drew with expenses.
A private memorial service celebrating Drew's memory will be held at Greene Funeral Service located at 1503 S. York Rd., Gastonia. Those wishing to send flowers may have them delivered to Greene Funeral Service at the address listed above.
